In Part 1 of tattoos, I answered the question that most people have, is it a sin to get a tattoo? So if you haven’t read part 1, go read that first then come back to this one. You can also find videos on both part 1 & 2 on my YouTube Channel, Biblically Beautiful. Today, I’m going deeper, because it’s not just about the pretty ink on your skin, but the spirit behind where and how you got it. The truth is, spirits can be attached to your tattoos.
Many tattoo parlors are filled with dark art, satanic imagery, and symbols. The music played there usually glorifies sin, it’s definitely not glorifying God.
Many, and I mean most, tattoo artists live lifestyles that openly reject God, or are even involved in witchcraft, satanism, or other occult practices.
When you allow someone to mark your body permanently, you are giving them access to leave a mark, not just physically, but spiritually.
If your tattoo was tied to sin, rebellion, or done in an ungodly setting by an ungodly person, it’s important to repent, not just for the tattoo itself, but for what it may represent spiritually.
Repentance means turning your heart back to God, asking Him to cleanse you from anything that does not honor Him.
2 Corinthians 7:1 says “Let us cleanse ourselves from all defilement of body and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.”
Tattoos aren’t just physical markings, they can carry spiritual associations depending on where, how, and why they were done. Here are three reasons to pray over them,
1. To Renounce Any Ungodly Connection.
Prayer breaks any link to darkness and dedicates your body back to the Lord (2 Corinthians 7:1).
2. To Break Curses or Unholy Dedications. Some tattoo artists or parlors may knowingly or unknowingly dedicate their work, tools, or clients to false gods, occult practices, or demonic influences. By praying, you reject and break any curse, dedication, or claim the enemy might try to place over you. “So submit to [the authority of] God. Resist the devil [stand firm against him] and he will flee from you.” (James 4:7).
3. To rededicate your body to God
1 Corinthians 6:19–20 says our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit. Praying over your tattoo declares that this part of your body belongs fully to God and is set apart for His glory, no matter what it once represented.
If you don’t know what to pray, you can pray this over your tattoo, and mean it with your whole heart!
Lord, I repent for any sin, rebellion, or unholy association tied to this tattoo. I renounce and break any spiritual tie or curse connected to the person, place, or meaning behind it. I dedicate my body and every part of it back to You, Lord, for Your glory alone. In Jesus’ name, amen.
I’m personally in the process of getting all six of my tattoos removed, because I have this burning desire to get my body back to its purest form. That’s my conviction, but yours may be different.
If God convicts you to remove your tattoo, be obedient. But if He doesn’t, know that His grace still covers you as long as it’s no longer tied to anything unholy, and your body is rededicated to Him.
Know that God can redeem anything, and anyone, even the marks we’ve made on our skin. Give it to Him, pray over it, and walk in His freedom.
